But what do you do when the phone's battery suddenly dies in the middle of the day, and the child is far from home? Gathering knowledge on preventive actions and how to respond in such a situation is crucial for ensuring the safety of the youngest.
Preparation Before Leaving
Meticulous preparation for a day when the phone might stop working is one of the most important steps a parent can take. First and foremost, ensure the child always leaves the house with a full battery. A small, portable charger (power bank) can also prove invaluable during a crisis. It is worth making sure that the bag also contains a charging cable.
Remind your child to avoid continuous use of apps that quickly drain the battery, such as video games or video streaming services. Establishing basic rules, such as limiting screen time outside the home, can also help conserve energy.
Knowledge of Alternative Contact Methods
Encourage your child to memorise the most important phone numbers. In case of a breakdown, they can use traditional landline phones or friends' phones. It's good for the child to know where to find help points – for example, police stations, information points, or service establishments like bookstores or pharmacies.
Creating an Emergency Plan
Discuss with your child a detailed action plan in case the phone runs out of battery. It is important to establish safe meeting points in the city where the child can wait for an adult in case of problems. Such places should be well-lit and frequently visited.
Consider designating a list of adults the child can contact in case of an emergency. This could be a relative living nearby or a trusted neighbour.
Basic Safety Guidelines
Encourage your child to remain vigilant and calm in situations of lost contact. Excessive panic doesn't help, and knowing basic urban safety rules will make the child feel more confident.
Teach your child to always stay in well-lit areas and avoid talking to strangers, especially in secluded locations. It is also important for them to learn to take notes of important information, such as the street name or the location where they are.
